23/02/2023 PhD Opportunity: Genetic Correlates of Psychosis Biotypes

February 23, 2026Sin categorizarAlvaro Diez

To the entire scientific and academic community:

We are pleased to announce an opportunity to pursue a PhD within our research group, SUCEDE (University of Valladolid / Hospital Clínico Universitario de Valladolid). We are seeking a highly motivated candidate with a competitive academic record to apply for a PFIS predoctoral contract (4 years) funded by the Instituto de Salud Carlos III.

The contract is linked to our newly funded project (PI25/01653): “Genetic correlates of the psychosis biotype with severe cognitive deficit.”

About the Project

The primary goal of this study is to define biologically valid “biotypes” within the psychotic syndrome (schizophrenia and bipolar disorder) based on clinical, cognitive, neurobiological, and genetic markers. Specifically, we will investigate how polygenic risk scores (PRS) associated with cortical excitation/inhibition imbalance relate to key neurofunctional alterations measured via electroencephalography (EEG), transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS), and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI).

Candidate Profile & Expectations

We are looking for candidates preferably with a background in Psychology, Biomedicine, Biology, Biomedical Engineering, or related disciplines. During their predoctoral training, the selected candidate will actively participate in:

  • Neurophysiological assessment and biosignal recording (64-channel EEG and TMS) in patients and controls.
  • Cognitive and clinical evaluations.
  • Advanced processing, cleaning, and analysis of neuroimaging data (EEG/TMS and MRI).
  • Statistical analysis of the relationship between cortical hyperactivation, cognitive biotypes, and genetic variables (PRS).
  • Writing scientific articles and participating in international conferences.

Essential Requirements (PFIS Regulations)

  • Must be eligible for admission or pre-admission to a UVa doctoral program for the 2026-2027 academic year.
  • Must not already hold a PhD or have benefited from previous national predoctoral grants for more than 12 months.

About the Environment

The work will be primarily conducted at the EEG Laboratory of the Faculty of Medicine (University of Valladolid). Our group offers a multidisciplinary environment with a solid track record in researcher training and an extensive national and international collaboration network (https://sucede.uva.es/).

How to Apply

Interested candidates should send their updated CV and a brief cover letter to a.diez@uva.es before the end of February. Please note that we must evaluate candidates and prepare the formal application before the March 12th deadline.

We appreciate you sharing this call with your students and professional networks.

Best regards,
